The Vienna City Marathon is an annual event that covers the traditional marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers, held in Vienna, Austria since its inception in 1984.
The inaugural race took place on March 25, 1984, with 794 participants. Over the years, it has become Austria’s largest road running event. In 2010, 32,940 runners from 108 nations participated in the race. Wolfgang Konrad has been the organizer of the event since 1989. In addition to the marathon, the race day features other events including a marathon team relay, a 4.2-kilometer fun run, and a half marathon. In 2011, running legend Haile Gebrselassie set the fastest half-marathon time ever recorded on Austrian soil.
A notable highlight from the 2012 edition was a unique half-marathon race between Haile Gebrselassie and Paula Radcliffe. Radcliffe was given a head start of 7 minutes and 52 seconds, the difference between their personal bests. Gebrselassie ultimately crossed the finish line 3 minutes and 19 seconds ahead of Radcliffe. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 edition of the race was canceled, and the 2021 edition was postponed to September 12, 2021.
