The Honolulu Marathon ranks among the top ten largest marathons globally. Held annually on the second Sunday of December, it’s renowned for its breathtaking scenery and exceptionally friendly ambiance. The marathon is popular for its location in Hawaii and is also popular among first-time marathoners, many of whom are visitors from Japan.
The Honolulu Marathon route showcases both the island’s beauty and its challenges. Starting at Ala Moana Beach Park on Ala Moana Boulevard, runners traverse through downtown, passing by Honolulu Harbor and the iconic Aloha Tower. After a loop through Chinatown, the course heads back towards Waikiki, offering stunning views of landmarks like the Sheraton Moana Surfrider and Waikiki Beach. As the race progresses, participants encounter the majestic Diamond Head, where they ascend for panoramic vistas of Oahu’s eastern coastline. Descending into Kahala, runners weave through residential and commercial areas before returning to Kapiolani Park for the finish.
Continuing along the coast, the route winds through picturesque communities like Waialae Iki, Aina Haina, and Niu Valley. Runners then pass through Hawaii Kai, enjoying views of Maunalua Bay Beach Park and the Waialae Country Club. A final stretch around Diamond Head crater leads to the finish line near Kapiolani Park Bandstand, offering a fitting end to this scenic and challenging marathon.
