The Boston Marathon, an iconic annual race, takes place in eastern Massachusetts, United States, typically on Patriots’ Day, the third Monday of April. Originating in 1897, it was inspired by the marathon in the 1896 Summer Olympics, making it the oldest annual marathon globally and a prominent fixture among road racing events. Managed by the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) since its inception, the marathon draws both amateur and professional runners worldwide, navigating through challenging terrain and weather conditions from Hopkinton to Copley Square in Boston.

Over the years, the event has evolved from its modest beginnings of 15 participants to attracting an average of 30,000 registered runners annually. Notably, the 1996 Centennial Boston Marathon holds the distinction of being the world’s largest marathon, boasting a record-breaking 38,708 entrants.

Despite challenges, such as the cancellation of the 2020 race due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Boston Marathon perseveres, offering a blend of athleticism, tradition, and community spirit that captivates half a million spectators along the route, solidifying its status as New England’s most-watched sporting event. The 128th Boston-Marathon was held on April 15, 2024, and More than 30,000 race participants from more than 100 countries came together on Monday to take part in the world’s oldest marathon.

Tentatively Qualifier Registration for the 2025 Boston Marathon will open on September 2024.
